In 1972, the former German paratrooper and now 79-year-old researcher Werner Freund founded the wolves reserve Wolfspark Werner Freund in the town of Merzig in the land of Saarland, Germany. Over the past 40 years, Freund has raised more than 70 wolves. Currently, the reserve area of 10 hectares is home to 29 wolves, who form six flocks.
